‘Loomis day’ is observed annually on the 30th of May in honor of Mahlon Loomis, who received the patent for ‘wireless telegraphy’ in 1872, which he had demonstrated successfully, and proved the first wireless aerial communication.

Why Loomis Day?
The world has been evolving into a wireless era since the 1990s and to this day. It has completely changed our way of living. And so, to honor Mahlon Loomis as one of the pioneers of wireless transmission, this day is observed. Mahlon Loomis, a dentist by profession from Washington D.C, received a US patent numbered 129,971, which was titled “An Improvement in Telegraphing” on wireless telegraphy in July in 1872. He was the man responsible for changing the world’s way in terms of the wireless telegraph.
Loomis had ideated the earth’s atmospheric potential and believed that the concentric layers in the atmosphere would generate wireless connections. He experimented with this idea using two kites tied to copper wires and flew them miles apart at the same altitude, on top of a mountain. He had attached the wires of the kites to a galvanometer and found that moving one of the kites resulted in the movement of the other. He had proved his idea successful in transferring of signal through this experiment. He then received a patent titled ‘An improvement in telegraphing’ on wireless telegraphy.
Therefore, his discovery based on this experiment is significant in the world. We should be grateful to all the pioneers of wireless transmission for their contribution that has grown into the present digital age. And all the facilities that we have at the back of our hands like – Wi-Fi, Television, Phone, etc., we owe it all to the initial idea of Loomis. Therefore, considering all these reasons, it is only a good idea to be celebrating ‘Loomis day.’ Cheers to the person who first gave a thought and envisioned the potential of the atmospheric capabilities of the earth.
The radio, TV, the internet, and numerous other technologies result from these findings. Thanks to the evolution of wireless telegraphy, the world’s way has become so much convenient and effortless.
Loomis is greatly responsible for all these, and his contributions are of utmost importance.
