Why National Medical Assistants Day?
A medical assistant or a health care assistant is an allied health care professional who facilitates the smooth functioning of any medical establishment. From scheduling appointments to carrying out minor medical procedures like blood draws, medical assistants work in various capacities. Whether your doctor’s instructions went over your head or you are at the brink of an anxiety attack, medical assistants are always ready to guide and put you at ease.
Medical assistant recognition day is part of the medical assistant’s recognition week also known as MARweek, which is annually celebrated on the third week of October. On this day employers and colleagues are encouraged to appreciate the work of the medical assistants and do something special for them. The slogan “Medical assistants at the heart of Health Care” found on the signature heart logo designed by the AAMA is reflective of the work the medical assistants do daily. Their versatile role in the healthcare industry ensures that patients receive the best care and service.
A typical medical assistant’s day commences by retrieving overnight messages and calls, reviewing the appointments for the day, preparing the essential paperwork, prepping the room and equipment. They are also involved in recording the patient’s vital signs and updating the case history before the meeting with the physician. When the last patient and the doctor prepare to leave, the medical assistants are still up and running, completing patient charts, restocking the examination rooms, returning calls, and scheduling appointments. Not a walk in the park!
While medical assistants have been the backbone of medical practices for a long time, initially medical assisting was not considered a credentialed profession in the health care sector. Later through the efforts of the American Association of Medical Assistants and individuals like Maxine Williams, medical assisting became an established profession.
The efforts to recognize this profession began with the gathering of the Kansas medical assistants in 1955. They aimed to form a national organization and to raise medical assisting to the level of a fully recognized credentialed profession. The AAMA or the American Association of Medical Assistants was established in 1956 with 78 representatives from the 15 states. They began by contributing $5 for their memberships to aid the educational support. The AAMA was finally recognized as an official accrediting agency for the programs related to medical assisting in the year 1974 by the US office of education.
Medical assisting is a fast-growing career in the USA with over 190,000 graduates. This day helps to appreciate the professionals who often don’t receive the spotlight or appreciation for their contribution.
