Why National Barbie Day?
The day is dedicated to an iconic toy, the barbie as she made her first presence on the day at the American national toy fair, New York in 1959.
It’s astonishing how a non-living toy changed the perspective of living life and dreams of every girl? How this ideal toy enhances women’s empowerment and encourages them to dream big and stand for themselves. We should at least take a moment today to thank the toy for lending the toy industry tremendous change, for always entertaining us no matter where?
Barbie is the name we all have grown up listening to for this toy, though some of us referred to it as our favorite names and some might call themselves Barbie due to its exquisite looks. But the real name of the doll is Barbara Millicent Roberts and it was created and introduced to the world by Ruth handler.
The first Barbie model was based on a German doll and yet its sale touched billions around the world. As time evolved people began to criticize Barbie for its undefendable ideal of a woman, for its unrealistic self and its shape. The Barbie we see today is way different from the first model of Barbie as the time change our supermodel Barbie has also evolved. Due to a heavy demand for the barbie toy people got bored with it soon and wanted something new and interesting and that is when Mattel introduced barbie’s boyfriend to the world named ken in the year 1961. And slowly the toy became more iconic with its new releases and inspirations.
In 1962 Barbie bought her own dream house when women around the world were not even allowed to get a bank account for themselves which enhanced women’s empowerment in society and encouraged women to stand up for themselves. In 1968 Barbie introduced her best friend Christie to the world which was the first black doll in the market. In 1984 Barbie signed its first partnership with designer Oscar de la Renta and he designed special clothing for barbie. In 1992 barbie was elected as a candidate in parliament and was considered a member for the same. In 2001 barbie made her on-screen screen debut with the movie “barbie in the nutcracker” which also broke many old and recent records.
