Why Buffet Day?
Everyone enjoys a good buffet. Restaurants (those specialized in the buffet) present a wide range of menu, catering to everyone’s favorites. Diners can easily choose and serve the food themselves, which is extremely useful in feeding a large group of individuals at the same time. The Buffet system is prominently used in big organizations but works well in household settings as well.
A lesser-known fact is that the word “buffet” is taken from the name of a type of French sideboard furniture where the food was served. Perhaps it was done so that it can be pronounced easily since “smorgasbord” isn’t quite it (sounds like something straight out of Harry Potter, if you will).
Historically, buffet systems originate in the mid-16th century from the Brannvinsbord, a type of Swedish schnapps table, a table of shots of alcoholic beverages. It was during the expansion of railroads in Europe did a smorgasbord buffet increase in popularity. In 1939, at the New York World’s Fair exhibition, the Swedes people had put forward a display of smorgasbord. They had laden the table with the best Swedish foods, hence grabbing a lot of attention. During the late 20th century, Swedes had introduced this system in New York and in the English speaking world it came to be known as “buffet”.
Although, this day is to bring out that inner food connoisseur in yourself, it is even more important to also help those in need and put forward a helping hand. At the end of the day helping one another and those in need takes priority. One can take initiative and help out the less fortunate ones and provide them with foods and drinks to aid them this National Buffet Day.
