Why National Chocolate Candy Day?
Chocolate candy is one of the most popular sweets that you can find and you can understand that by seeing it has its holiday and it is to be celebrated on December 28th of every year.
The word “chocolate” comes from the Aztec word “xocoatl,” which means the bitter drink which is brewed from cacao beans. The theobroma cacao tree is where the seed tropical comes from and this is how we receive chocolate, but of course, it is not sweet at first, the cacao is very bitter and it has to be mixed with lots of sugar to make it the sweet chocolate that we love.
Cacao has been cultivated for three thousand years and it has been grown in Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. It is known to us that the earliest documentation of using cacao seeds is from around 1100 BC. Before they made it into the sweet candy, Chocolate was used as a beverage and this beverage was used for medical purposes.
The solid chocolate forms we enjoy today are credited to the inventions of a Dutch Chemist, one Mr. Coenraad Van Houten in 1828. It was his hydraulic press that made it possible for him to remove the cocoa butter from the cacao. A chocolate bar consists of confectionery packaged in a bar or log that is coated by chocolate. The size of these bars is usually enough for one person, the bars are mostly in solid form and they can contain nuts, caramel, dry fruits, etc.
Today chocolate is favored by almost 80% of the people around the world and in the U.S alone approximately 2.8 billion pounds of chocolate is consumed annually or in simpler terms over 11 pounds of chocolate is consumed per person. According to the reports, around 3.97 million tons of cocoa had been produced around the world during the crop year 2015-16. It is known that chocolate manufacturers use 40% almond and 20% peanuts of the whole world to produce chocolate.
