Why National Earmuff Day?
The origin of this day has an interesting history behind it. As we already know that necessity is the mother of invention. In the mid-1800s, a fifteen-year-old boy, Chester Greenwood, spent an entire day ice-skating and was freezing in the cold. He wanted a way to keep his ears warm in the chilly weather. So, Mr. Greenwood had an idea, and with the help of his grandmother, he sewed tufts of fur between loops of wire. This is how “Earmuffs” was created.
On March 13, 1877, he received a patent for his creation. Before this, the only way to protect one’s ears in freezing weather was a hat, earplugs, or mufflers. But we all know and have experienced how this amazing creation outweighs its competitors in keeping our ears warm.
Mr. Greenwood had no idea how this innocent piece of the invention would prove to be a boon to millions of people all over the world living in chilly regions. Earmuffs, also known as thermal muffs, are now a basic necessity that and almost everyone possesses at least one pair. Do you remember, in your childhood when your friends used to tease you for wearing ugly masks. Thanks to this invention, we could replace that with something trendy and flexible in our winter fashionwear without looking like a joker.
Nowadays, earmuffs are basically classified as a clothing accessory or PPE. Its construction typically consists of a pair of ear shields or pads connected by a curved strip, usually made of metal or thermoplastic. It is most commonly used to keep ears warm in cold weather, and thus the pads are made from fabric, foam or thermoplastic, or the combination of these materials. Earmuffs are usually worn on top of a person’s head or around the back of his head, like a headband. It comes in a wide variety of colors and multiple designs. The earpads come in various shapes and sizes depending on the purpose and fashion.
The earmuffs later also accelerated the development of “acoustic earmuffs.” As the name suggests, these are sound dampeners. This is mostly used by construction site workers all over the world. This can also be used in a person’s day to day life as it acts as a noise cancellation mechanism. These earmuffs provide various levels of sound cancellation facility according to one’s needs. The maximum Noise Reduction Rating(NRR) that it has is around 33 decibels. It almost blocks the sound entirely!
