1.  This day in 1907, little over 12,000 people passed via Ellis Island. Over 1,000,000 immigrants were processed at Ellis Island throughout the whole year of 1907.
2.  On April 17, 2001, the inaugural National Ellis Island Family History Day was commemorated.
3.  This day honors our country’s governors’ formal decree that April 17 be recognized as “National Ellis Island Family History Day.”
4.  Three unaccompanied kids were among the first to appear at Ellis Island.
5.  When people migrated to New York, the island would not be the first location they arrived.
6.  On the island, immigrants’ identities were not altered.

History of National Island Family History Day:

From 1892 to 1924, Ellis Island in New York served as the entry point for millions of immigrants seeking to enter the United States. The date of April 17th was designated to commemorate Ellis Island; then, on this date in 1907, more immigrants were assessed than just about every other day in the island’s history — 11,747 persons.

People migrated to the United States from all over the world throughout the following several decades. Some were escaping violence and political turmoil, while others were wanting to start again.

More than 12 million individuals had passed through Ellis Island by the date it was decommissioned in 1954. It is hard to overestimate the influence this has on the development of the community of the nation.

On November 12, 1954, Ellis Island shuttered all 33 towers and was deemed surplus government estate. However, it resurfaced to the community in 1976, with hour-long group tours of the “primary landings facility” exclusively.
