The Spokane Ministerial Alliance was asked to recognize fatherhood on June 5 in honor of Sonora Dodd, the daughter of Civil War soldier William Jackson Smart. Her father had been a single parent to six kids. She made her request out of a profound sense of thanks and love.
She also came up with this Day idea after being inspired by Anna Jarvis’ efforts to establish Mother’s Day.
Finally, the Church decided to observe on the third Sunday in June. After that, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared this day to be celebrated on the third Sunday in June by signing a presidential proclamation.
The first recorded celebration of the Day happened after the Monograph Mining Disaster in West Virginia. In December 1907, the catastrophe claimed 361 lives, orphaned almost 1,000 children. To her pastor, Robert Thomas Webb, Grace Golden Clayton proposed a day dedicated to all of those parents. The neighborhood came together on July 5th, 1908, in memory of the miners who had perished. They gathered at the Central United Methodist Church, formerly known as Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, in Fairmont, West Virginia.
Although the present celebration of Father’s Day got its start in the US in the early 20th century, it quickly spread to Canada, where it has been observed ever since. This may not be as extensively observed as Mother’s Day and is not as much marketed commercially, but it still holds a unique meaning for Canadians and is still going strong.
While this Day was being observed locally in many places across the nation, there was almost instantly unofficial support for declaring the occasion a national holiday. Its strongest supporter was William Jennings Bryant. President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge allowed this Day to be declared a federal holiday in 1924. However, nothing official was done.
