The story behind the celebration of this day has a long and interesting history. Let’s take a look at it!
NLAAD campaigns strive to promote and providing information against the prevention of HIV. Cultural barriers are present that preach against any disease called AIDS. However, it is vital to have good knowledge about this infection.
The first National Latino AIDS Awareness Day was initiated in 2003, under the leadership of Dennis DeLeon. This event was held as AIDS was disproportionately more among the Latinos, who comprised almost 14% of the United States population. Events were celebrated almost across 100 cities that included New York, Miami, and also Los Angeles. In 2004, NLAAD had a theme that said, “Open your eyes, HIV has no borders.” This year events were performed almost across 250 cities.
In 2005, the number of partner organizations went up to almost 1000, and it was celebrated almost across 350 cities. This year also had some television coverage of the event as many press releases and conferences were held. 2006 had the theme that said, “Knowledge is power. Get the facts. Get tested for HIV.” The fifth NLAAD was celebrated in 2007, and the sixth NLAAD in 2008 saw the invention of an official media component that is “SOY” or “I AM.” “SOY” is a Spanish media campaign that consists of stories of many Latino people who have had HIV. This also contains the parts where the loved one of the affected people helped them.
In 2009, the NLAAD theme said, “united we can stop HIV and prevent AIDS.” This was then followed by the launch of the bi-lingual official website of NLAAD.
At the end of the day, everyone, including the Hispanics and Latino population, is all of our duties. NLAAD is doing its parts, but we should also contribute. This Is a problem that can be solved if we stand united. People are usually embarrassed or ashamed to even confront this disease. They fear their reputation. This is something that can be changed if all of us support those who need help. This is a very strong stigma, and we will have to stand united to overcome the problem.
AIDS is a very dangerous disease that may last for a lifetime and maybe very serious. The age group between 13 to 64 can easily receive HIV and get infected. The Centers suggest for Disease Controls that sexually active people should get tested at least once a week. It is better to be safe rather than sorry!
