Why National Nevada Day?
It is a great matter of pride for any state to get admitted to the Union of the states. In contrast to other states of the USA, Nevada holds a special position. It is the only other state after West Virginia to be granted statehood during the Civil War on 31st October 1864. All the citizens gather on this day in the capital to celebrate its grand heritage.
Nevada’s journey to a permanent statehood is also quite interesting as it lacks the eligibility criteria of a minimum number of residents by 60,000 even after being admitted as a state in the union in 1864 till 1880. According to the US State Census Bureau, it lost its population even after 1880, and it took Nevada 30 years to regain its population to fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria of statehood.
It’s pretty difficult to believe that a state which is probably the most celebrated state at present because of its lavish and glorious city Las Vegas which is famous all over the world for its grand casinos and nightlife, was once the most lonely state which was known just for being the home of most lonely highway. But everything changed for the state when Comstock Lode discovered silver here in 1859, which gave a dramatic rise in the number of residents living in the state.
In 1905, the state witnessed Las Vegas’s establishment, which is its present-day pride, when the state got connected by two railroads. It took a lot of time for the resorts and casinos to be opened in the state because of the lack of basic facilities such as electricity, which gets resolved after the construction of the Hoover Dam, which became a source of hydropower for Nevada, Arizona & California.
The state government encourages its citizens to celebrate this day to make everyone aware of its heritage. To ensure maximum participation of the citizens, the Nevada government changed the official date of 31st October to last Friday of October every year so that its citizens can enjoy a 3-day long weekend. But most of its mega-events are always organized on Saturday in the capital Carson City which was followed by several events in Las Vegas and Henderson.
A grand parade has been organized in the nation’s capital since 1938, which holds the distinction and pride of being the largest statehood celebration across the country. The day begins with a delicious pancake breakfast, and the launch of a hot air balloon followed by the Nevada Day Classic Run/Walk at Carson Street. The parade, which begins at 10 AM and covers a distance of nearly 2 miles, hosts different activities mentioned in the parade day entries in its way that includes floats, marching bands, teams, banners, etc.
During the parade, contestants try a hand at various competitions such as Single-Jack Drilling World Championship in which the candidates have to dig holes to place dynamite sticks by hands and the hilarious Annual Beard Competition is a must watch where Nevadians participate in determining the best beards on the basis of various factors such as length, redness, blackest, whitest, etc.
