On September 28, as we get closer to the closing of the 13 original colonies, National North Carolina Day commemorates the 12th State that chose to be a part of the Union. The State was the first to support an independent state from the British at the very first Continental Congress.

History of National North Carolina Day:
A state with a variety of accomplishments, including having the highest percentage of Nobel laureates in the U.S., being the location where the Wright brothers attempted their very first flights, and being the 12th State to be a part of the Union, is worthy of acknowledgement. Therefore, at the beginning of the 20th century, a suggestion was put forward at the public schools in North Carolina to earmark a day to “awaken a proper pride in the history of the state.”
The reason for the recommendation was also to reduce the rate of the number of people who were illiterate within North Carolina by popularizing the system of public education that is free. The rise in illiteracy was due to the lack of enthusiasm for levying taxes to boost education following the Civil War. State officials also established a Literary and Historical Association in North Carolina to promote the cultural interests of the population that was not connected.
Each year, schools focused on different aspects of the history of North Carolina and gave out books to students to learn about the topic. The day begins with a rendition of the “My State and ‘Tis of Thee song, followed by the students will read a few recitations on topics like DeGraffenried’s colony in New Bern, the Cary Rebellion as well as John Lawson’s death John Lawson, early education in the region, as well as fishing in the eastern part of North Carolina. The program closes with a cappella of the song ‘The Old North State.’
