History of National One-Hit Wonder Day:
When American producer and artist Andy Warhol said, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes,” Warhol was not quite right. From ‘It’s raining of The Weather Girls to ‘Harlem Shake by Baauer, many artists have enjoyed world fame for a brief period, but it’s just their top singles that shine today.
In 1990, music fanatic and writer Steve Rosen declared the 25th of September as National One-Hit Wonder Day to honor and celebrate forgotten artists and their smash songs. This was also his method of celebrating his birthday.
This act of remembrance and bringing back performers and their hits from the past gave birth to radio and music shows that exclusively featured single-hit songs. On the 7th of July, 1999, the American cable channel VH1 showed a documentary series named “Where Are They Now?” The show’s first episode was devoted to single-hit sensations, and they reconnected with stars who had disappeared from the spotlight following their brief moment of fame. The exhibition showcased several one-hit bands such as The Weather Girls, Starland Vocal Band, Frank Stallone, Rupert Holmes, Animotion, T’Pau, Rex Smith, Terry Jacks, Soft Cell, The Vapors, House of Pain, EBN-OZN as well as Tracy Ullman. in 2002, VH1 has also published a 100-list of single-hit stars on their countdown program “VH1’s 100 Greatest One-hit Wonders.” It featured the names of artists who could create just one American hit single during their careers.
