Initially,the day was recognized as only “Washington’s day”.During 1888,a newspaper advertised the day as “President’s day”,from there on,it becomes an unofficial name.
In Alexandria,a city of Virginia, President’s day is celebrated throughout the month since washington adopted this city as his home city. Moreover,a parade is held to tribute washington.Visitors of George Washington Birthplace National Monument situated at Virginia are greeted with sweets on this day.
Cherry pie is the traditional food prepared on this day.This is related to washington cutting down a cherry tree in his childhood.
In Florida,a festival called “GeorgeFest” is held on this day where competitions and events are organized and sponsored by the local donors.
Only the federal and state offices are closed in this day,however all the private business remains open.
On this day, in the upper chamber of the United States, George Washington’s farewell address is read before starting the session.

After his retirement,he spent much of his time in plantation and other stuffs though the income was not up to the mark.he highly relied on the income from his lands that were rented for Indians.He even planned to sell all of his lands because some refused to pay him the rent.
His last phrase is “”Doctor, I die hard, but I am not afraid to go.”he had conveyed this to one of his doctors just two days before his death.
History of National President’s Day:
Initially,congress enacted an act and proclaimed a federal holiday on February 22 to honor George Washington.
Despite the fact that George Washington was born on February 11 as per the julian calendar,after the adoption of Gregorian calendar,his birthdate fell on February 22 and is widely recognized as his birthday.Therefore,this date was been in practice.Nevertheless,in 1971,in accordance with the uniform monday holiday act,the day was shifted to third monday of every February to commemorate all the former and incumbent president(s).
