History of School Librarian Day:
The Origin of this Day is uncertain. However, sources claimed that librarianship was in practice right from the 8th century. In Around the 8th century, Ashurbanipal, a King create a library and appointed a keeper. Thus, introducing librarianship as a profession.
In 323 BC, After the death of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy I created a library called “The Great Library of Alexandria” which becomes a house for Greek Literatures and Notable Librarians like Zenodotus, Aristarchus, Aristophanes, Callimachus, Eratosthenes, Appollonius, and Demetrius were the custodians of this great library.
During the Roman Period, Aristocrats had private libraries at home. Though scholars were involved in circulating their books, There was not a specific role as Librarian.
During the fall of Roman Empire, Monasteries kept the libraries alive where monks used to copy books. Anastasias, a monk, was entitled with the role of the librarian as a reward for translating Greek literacies and also certain security features like chaining the desk, organizing the book in alphabetical order and checklists were introduced.
In the 14th Century, universities employed librarians gradually in schools. However, employment role librarian was introduced only in the 18th century.
Nowadays, Libraries were monitored with the help of electronic equipment.The librarians have a list of books which are in circulations with library cards being issued to the students.
