Celebrated annually on every January 4th, the National Spaghetti Day honors the simple and delicious pasta recipe that has its roots from ancient times! Have it cooked with your favorite sauce and/or combine it with meatballs or veggies of your choice! However, you’d like to have them, grab your spaghetti bowl and sit tight as we travel back to find the spaghetti roots!

Why National Spaghetti Day?
The chilly weather or nights, there is nothing more comforting than a hot bowl of spaghetti! It is a much-loved pasta for ages across the world long before it became a staple of Italian cuisine.
Spaghetti comes from the singular Italian word “Spaghetto” meaning “twine” or “string.”The origin of spaghetti has been debated for many years now.
Jerusalem’s Talmud records the common consumption of boiled dough among Palestinians during AD 3 and 4.
Another 9th-century record shows the Arab dictionary describing a string-like dish itriyyaas made with semolina. It was cooked before being eaten.
Writing to Sicily’s Norman King in 1154 records the manufacture and export of itriyya from Norman Sicily.
Only in the 14th and 15th century, the trend began for dried pasta as it was easier to store and did not get spoilt easily. The dried pasta was a boon for people who began exploring the world in their ships.
With voyages happening across the globe, it is not surprising that the dried pasta was introduced to different geographies and cultures! However, the popularity of pasta grew more in Italy during the 19th century with the establishment of pasta factories and mass production of pasta.
As Italians immigrated to the US, they introduced their Italian dishes. Spaghetti was served to American diners in the early 19th century. The earlier version did not include Basil or Oregano to it but today most of the spaghetti dishes include them!
It can be made from durum wheat, brown rice, and many more! Today you can make a variety of pasta dishes using spaghetti and sauces ranging from tomato sauce, meat sauce, clam sauce, Alfredo sauce, Spaghetti ala Carbonara, or with some garlic and oil!
