Why National Sticker Day?
Stickers are nothing but labels with adhesives. The origin of stickers can be traced back to Europe during the 1880s. Historians attest that these merchants here stuck labels on their products to promote their goods to travelers and shoppers!
To stick the labels, a gum pastes as an adhesive during this pre-industrial period. By the 1900s, a specific adhesive was developed for stickers and was used for sticking stamps as well! This gum was dried and would gain its adhesiveness when moistened
This Sticker Day honors the contributions of R. Stanton Avery, born this day in 1907. Avery was the first to create stickers called the “Kum Kleen Pricer Stickers” that had a removable backing in 1935 for easy usage! This invention paved the way for the establishment of the Avery Adhesive Label Corporation in 1946. Previously they had started as Avery Adhesives with a meager 19 employees in 1940. Today they have a global business presence in over 50 countries with more than 30,000 employees!
