Why National Teflon Day?
Teflon is a brand name that describes a synthetic chemical known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The Teflon chemical is used in coating a variety of products, an outcome made possible by its characteristic waterproof property, as well as the fact that it reduces friction while at the same time creating a surface that is not sticky. Teflon has been used since the 1940s and serves in many things, including heat lamp bulbs to fabric protectors.
This special day honors the accidental invention of Teflon by renowned scientists. Dr. Roy Plunkett had been working in the E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company lab alongside his assistant. During the lab session or procedure that he was doing, Dr. Roy accidentally discovered the polytetrafluoroethylene chemical.
Chemistry experts registered Teflon as a trademark in 1945. Forty years later, Dr. Roy Plunkett was inducted by the Inventors’ Hall of Fame to their numbers. Although Dr. Roy gets the credit for inventing the Teflon chemical, there is yet another different person who saw and appreciated Teflon for its potential to serve a greater role. This was Marion A. Trozzolo, a professor that brought the Teflon from the laboratory and applied it to kitchenware.
Marion was a professor in Kansas City in Missouri. She used Teflon to coat her scientific utensils and later used this to establish Laboratory Plasticware Fabricators. In 1961, Mario marketed the very first United States-made Teflon-coated frying pan and called it the Happy Pan. Although the Teflon was invented by accident, it has acquired notable popularity over the years making it a popularly sought chemical by manufactures with the intention of making products that hold more value when the element of being waterproof is introduced.
In the present day, Teflon is found almost everywhere, including in metals used for cooking. Teflon is also used in protecting fabrics and reducing friction within the aerospace industry. Teflon also serves to increase the production of pharmaceuticals and reducing the chances of contamination.
