Why National Thomas Jefferson Day?
National Thomas Jefferson Day celebrates the birthday of the third President of the United States, who was also the influential Founding Father and lead author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743. He was the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809, the principal author of the 1776 Declaration of Independence. He was involved in politics early in his life and served as a Virginia politician before and during the Revolutionary War.
As one of the youngest Continental Congress members, a group of delegates from the thirteen colonies, he worked hard to ensure that his voice was heard and his people well represented. It was during this time that the Declaration of Independence was drafted in Jefferson’s words. After the revolution, he became the first US Secretary of State and the second Vice President before becoming President himself.
Many of Jefferson’s views helped build America as it is today. He believed in the separation of church and state, individual citizens’ rights, and in America’s essential ideal of making all people equal. Celebrate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday each year to recognize his contributions to the United States and its government.
