Why National West Virginia Day?
When most Virginian civilians chose to be separated from the Union, the West Virginians did not lose their loyalty towards the Union and formed their constitution and appealed for statehood. It was the 35th state to be accepted by the Union. Back in 1863, it was the only state which was created from other states. The other one was created at the time of the Civil War.
The Thirteen Colonies consisted of British civilians on the Atlantic shore of current America. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, they declared liberation, and in 1776, the United States of America was formed. These thirteen colonies included Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. Later, a total of eighteen states were formed from these thirteen colonies. Vermont was cut off from New York. Kentucky was detached from Virginia. Tennessee was initially part of North Carolina. Massachusetts and Maine united to form one state.
Harper’s Ferry town of West Virginia has witnessed unprecedented historical events like John Brown’s raid and Stonewall Jackson’s contribution as Confederate general during the Civil War. West Virginia is also recognized as the Mountain States since it possesses three substantial mountain ranges: The Appalachian, Allegheny, and Blue Ridge. The last one is responsible for almost seventy-eight percentage of forests in the state. Within the mountains’ ruggedness, there reside several reservoirs of bituminous coal, making Virginia one of the largest providers of coal in the Mississippi River region.
Not only is Virginia famous for a marvelous view of the mountain range, but it is the home for many people deeply rooted in its core and enhancing its heritage with a great culture. One can spend their quality time by just watching the beauty of the landscape, hearing the folk tale on John Henry, or going for a mushroom hunt. They can even grill and share one or two with you.
