Why National Zipper Day?

The National Zipper Day celebrates the issuing of the patent of the present-day zipper in 1913. It serves as a celebration of an achievement many take for granted or overlook, although it makes for a very significant achievement in as far as development is concerned.

Zippers are a concept introduced and invented by the renowned Elias Howe, known for his achievements in inventing the sewing machine. Elias was honored as the recipient for the patent in 1851, celebrating him for receiving a patent for the Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure. Nonetheless, Elias did not market this amazing invention, an action that saw him miss the recognition he truly deserved.

After 42 years, Whitcomb Judson started commercializing the Clasp Locker, a product that was similar to what Elias had invented. The clasp locker served as a more technical hook-and-eye fastener for the shoe. Whitcomb also initiated the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, although this did not achieve much success. Owing to the fact that Whitcomb marketed his invention, the developer earned credit for being the creator.

Gideon Sundback was hired by the Universal Fastener Company in 1906. Gideon was an electrical engineer of Swedish-American decent and was extremely skilled and popular for his commitment to the company. On the 29^th of April in 1913, Gideon received a patent for the present-day zipper, which by then went by the name Separable Fastener. Gideon went on to submit improvements to that particular invention four years later.

The present-day zipper as we know it is an almost similar design to what Gideon submitted and received patency for. The only difference between Gideon’s model and what we use today is the name.
