History of Native American Day:
Previously this day was celebrated as Columbus Day tribute to his contributions to the country. But in 1989, the legislature of South Dakota passed legislation. Governor George s Mickelson proposed legislation to proclaim the year 1990 as the reconciliation between the white people and native Americans. The South Dakota legislature has also changed the name of the day from Columbus Day to Native American day.
