Why National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day?
Cherry is such a tempting fruit that if it was the forbidden fruit that led mankind to the fall most of us would empathize with the situation. This sinfully tasty fruit became irresistible, clothed with the food of god’s, and has been luring mankind ever since. It’s almost impossible to be content with just one serving of these magnificent chocolate coated cherries popularly known as cherry cordials.
Cherries are among the oldest fruits to be cultivated in human history. As early as the 1700s the English experimented with sweet cherries soaking them in cherry brandy known as kirsch followed by coating it with chocolate. The French version was prepared using sour cherries known as Griottes followed by soaking in kirsch and chocolate coating. These were known as cherry cordials and are used to refer to the use of liqueur in the preparation. They were kept reserved for the holidays to unleash its intoxicating effects for a merry season.
The English and European settlers in America were ready to part with their land but not with their cherries. En route to the land of possibilities, the early settlers managed to stash cherries with their luggage for the voyage. The cherry fever caught on in America too and the demands for cherries grew exponentially.
The American style cordial preparation included a sugary syrup liqueur that was made by crushing cherries. It was cooked in brandy and sugar followed by chocolate covering. The prohibition of alcoholic beverages from 1920-1933 served as an occasion for the creation of chocolate-covered cherries using flavored sugar syrup. Alcohol or no alcohol, chocolate-covered cherries were in high demand and were commercially produced from 1929.
It is said that Angelo Cella, a confectioner of Italian descent initiated the cherry cordial frenzy in America in 1864. Cella confections a New York-based confectionery brand is a household name when it comes to cherry covered chocolate. Cella confection began its production in 1864 and upgraded to a large scale production by 1929. Tootsie Roll industries bought Cella confections due to its immense popularity and continue to sell chocolate-covered cherries retaining the brand name.
Though there are a variety of cordials and chocolate-covered goodies available today, cherry cordials and chocolate-covered cherries have a special place in our hearts and the market. When the holiday cheer fades away you can fallback on a packet of Chocolate covered cherries to brighten your day.
