Why National Mason Jar Day?
The bright and vibrant fruits and vegetables or any naturally available food item for that matter starts withering away once harvested. And for centuries many processes like drying, curing, pickling, and canning have been employed to preserve food items.
In 1858, John Landis Mason, a tinsmith invented the screw-threaded glass jar or bottle which possessed a ribbed neck. It was patented in 1857 and came to be known as Mason jar.
The advancement brought in by John Landis, patent #22186 helped to make a superior airtight seal for the screw neck bottles. The transparent bleached glass used for the jar made the contents visible and was an important factor in determining the quality of the content.
The era of industrialization and the mass production popularized Mason jars all over America and the top manufacturer was namely the Ball Corporation. During World War II there was an increased demand for the Mason jars as the US government encouraged people to grow their food.
Even then, the post-world war scenario was pretty bleak for the Mason jar industry as superior methods of food preservation, like refrigerators came into the picture. The migration of people to the cities and the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year via transportation were other contributing factors. Tin canning and the invention of plastic bakelites and nylon displaced the mason jars from the context.
The economic and environmental costs escorted by the processed food industries have persuaded many people to repent and live in harmony with nature, turning to the locally grown produce, and methods of preservation like canning. Mason jars hence became a symbolic throwback to the traditional values of self-sufficiency and communal life.
Mason jars were always known for their utility, aesthetic appeal, and re-usability. The mason jars are sturdy due to its thick glass with a band and jar that can be reused. Mason jars also came in various shapes and sizes. The large mason jar was used for storing fruits, vegetables, and pickling. The medium-sized mason jars are now used as fancy drinking mugs and add class to your presentation. The smaller jars are used to store snacks, spices, salad dressings, etc.
For many years the Mason jar carried the memories and produces of the season at its bosom so that we could savor the long gone fruits and vegetables at any time of the year. More than a means to prevent scarcity, it became a symbol of love when friends, families, and neighbors exchanged mason jars full of jam, pickles, fruits, and veggies.
