Why National Peace Rose Day?
National Peace Rose Day comes on the 3rd last day of the month of April, set aside for honoring and celebrating a light-yellow to cream-colored flower that has petals it with edges being flushed and crimson-pink in color. The Peace Rose is a beautiful flower, popular for its characteristic hardy nature. They are also very vigorous in growth, and extremely resistant to disease attacks. Annually celebrated, the National Peace Rose day is in honor of a renowned and fruitful garden rose.
The National Peace Rose traces its origins to Francis Meilland, a French horticulturalist known to have developed the flower between the years 1935 and 1939. Upon seeing the likelihood of France being invaded by the Germans with the intention of protecting the new rose, Meilland sent cuttings of the flower to his associates in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the US. The cuttings were thereafter sent to American the last plane just before the Germans invaded.
Every country that was the recipient of the peace rose cutting renamed the rose. France called it the Madame A. Meilland to honor the mother of Meilland, otherwise known as the breeder. Italians named it Gioia to mean joy, while Germans named it the Gloria Dei to mean glory to God. In the United States, the peace rose was called peace, an action that later saw the rose flower become the flower of the US.
With the closing of the Second World War in Europe, peace became the trade name and was finally proclaimed on the 29th of April, 1945. This proclamation was done by Conrad Pyle Co of the US in 1945.
Peace roses were handed out to individual delegates that attended the inauguration ceremony. The delegates came from the UN in San Francisco, with a tag stating their hope for peace rose to draw the thoughts of people towards an unending peace in the world
