History of National Step Family Day:
Since love and appreciation extends over time, there is something unique about taking a moment to be grateful on a specific day. There have been special days for quite a while, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Daughter’s Day, Sibling’s Day, and so on. But families that were blended did not receive the respect they merited.
As time passed and society began to accept more ideas, acceptance began to be given to ideas previously considered unconventional. Remarriage and divorce became more popular, and with it, stepfamilies. Alongside the internal struggles of mixing families, stepfamilies are also confronted with societal stereotypes and stigmas. They are expected to play the roles of a hostile society propagated through television and film, making it more difficult to work things out. Despite this pressure from the community, many blended families can overcome and triumph over all the obstacles to protect love and one another.
In the present, within the U.S.A. More than 70% of 18-year-olds live in a stepfamily. Blended families are becoming more prevalent and merit a day to be recognized and celebrated. Inspired by this, stepparent Christy Tusing Borgeld came up with National Step Family Day in 1997. Since then, September 16th of each day has become a day of dedication to step-family members across the country and even her own.
