Why Ravioli Day?
The word Ravioli has its roots in the Italian word “riavvolgere” meaning “to wrap”. And that is what is Ravioli all about! It’s a pasta dish which can be stuffed with sweet or savory fillings!
The stuffing is placed between two thin sheets of pasta and boiled for a few minutes to cook it!
Ravioli seems to be a modern dish, but it was first mentioned during the 14th century in the personal letters of a Prato merchant Mr. Francesco di Marco Datini. And then it was again mentioned in a cookbook as “rauioles” by King Richard II’s chef!
We can then witness Ravioli being served to the papal conclave in Rome during 1549. It was served with fillings of boiled pork belly, herbs, spices, raisins, sugar, and Parmesan cheese!
The crispier toasted ravioli can be traced back to the recent 1940’s St. Louis, Missouri! It resulted in an accidental invention at Oldani’s when a ravioli fell into the fryer! It is what we can call a delicious accident!
Even after 700 years, Ravioli continues to be an all-time crowd favorite! Most Americans love Ravioli for its versatile palate options! It suits the young and old! And you can stuff any of your favorite fillings!
Most ravioli recipes include baking or deep-frying them. You can enjoy a bowl of Ravioli paired with tomato or cheese dip. Else enjoy them in soup! You could also find bigger single-wrapped ravioli paired with any sauce of your choice!
You can cook them at home from scratch or check out your local stores for various stuffed and frozen ravioli versions ready to be cooked!
And there is also the canned Ravioli version popularized by the US Chef Boyardee! This version has a processed cheese or beef filling and is served in tomato sauce, or tomato-meat sauce, or a cheesier tomato-cheese sauce!
If you are more on the sweet side, try the fruit-filled or chocolate-filled recipes like the Butternut Ravioli Beignets or the Ravioli Dolci!
Thus you can play around with ravioli to suit your breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizer, snack, or dessert options!
It’s astonishing but not surprising that nearly 87% of the USA loves this Italian dish! Are you one of them?! Come explore with us as we take you through the sweet and savory paths of this pasta recipe!
