Why Superhero Day?
From the newspapers to social media to your very own life, it is evident that the dark forces of evil operate in mysterious ways wreaking havoc in the world. These real-life villains may have often troubled you, and you would have wished to be a superhero with a superpower so that you can end all the injustices and misery in the world. This longing to make the world a better place has resulted in the birth of several superheroes both fictional and real. Many of the childhood heroes that kids adore are superheroes from cartoons and comics, and it is almost impossible to find a child who does not own a superhero toy or comic in the 20th century.
Two names that pop up when we think about comics are Marvel and DC. The DC franchise takes on the darker side of humanity in comparison to Marvel which takes a more light-hearted approach. While you may find heated debates about which one is superior, these two popular comics books and their franchises either portray ordinary humans who became superheroes by overcoming their limitations or Gods who stood out to protect humanity at any cost. Even if Marvel and DC comics and their franchisees don’t ring a bell, Superman, Spiderman and Batman are the few names that you might have heard of as you grew up and you probably owned one of their action figures too.
In the US alone there are about 20 Superhero franchises that continue to mesmerize generation after generation. The intricate storylines and plots keep us enthralled and take us to a different world, as we live through the fictional lives of our favorite superheroes from different backgrounds and struggles. Many of these franchises depict superheroes of different origins so that people from different walks of life can associate and feel represented through these superheroes.
Even with numerous superhero franchises and comics, all their storylines run along a common thread. A super-evil villain comes into the picture and humanity is at stake. When humanity comes to standstill the superheroes take it upon themselves to save the world. At the very end these stories give us hope that no matter what, good triumphs over evil, and all the sacrifices and pain that you undergo to serve humanity will work together for a greater good. Yet it is often surprising how the brilliant script writers come up with stories that engross us to the very end, they are nothing short of the superheroes themselves.
As you switch off your Netflix or prime, you come to the real world, wishing that these heroes were real. A world where no caped superheroes are flying around to save the day, a place where no vigilantes strive to punish evil, and no mutants to save the day. Yet if we look closely in our daily lives, we can identify many superheroes, flesh, and blood. They don’t come flying from the skies, they don’t land in fancy batmobiles but they live among us trying to serve people in their capacities.
Some of the superheroes we see in our daily lives include the superheroes who save lives, doctors, paramedics, and nurses; the brave soldiers, firefighters, and cops who put their lives on the line to catch criminals; teachers, role models, friends, and family who inspire you to be a better person and do the right thing or a father and mother toiling day and night to give their children a comfortable life. With or without uniforms, we live among many superheroes who overcame many struggles to be where they are today, just that we don’t know their stories yet.
This Marvel-endorsed celebration is not just about the die-hard Marvel fans or Comicon enthusiasts. It is also a day to celebrate all the role models and mentors who have guided you all along. These ordinary individuals who lived extraordinary lives need to be celebrated and honored. As you celebrate this day, you can always aspire to be a hero not just by inspiring others but by overcoming your limitations and be your hero.

The National Superhero Day was created on December 28, 1995, by the employees of Marvel comics to honor the superheroes who serve people and protect them by fighting against evil. The employees also talked to the people in Pennsylvania enquiring about what superpowers they would like to possess. While many answers were based on the superpowers of fictional characters, other answers showed that people would like to have the abilities of the real-life superheroes they admire.
