Why Restless Legs Awareness Day?
Restless Legs Awareness Day aims to increase awareness of the medical condition known as the syndrome. It’s celebrated every year to coincide with the birthday of professor Karl-Axel Ekborn (born September 23, 1907, and died in 1977). This famous Swedish neuroscientist first wrote and described the condition in 1945. Since then, much has been discovered about the symptoms, but () there is still no primary reason, which could be related to blood iron levels or dopamine levels.
International Awareness Day aims to raise awareness regarding RLS and the associated jerky motions that can be caused and, sometimes, distress that it causes. There is no cure yet searched for. In 2013, North Carolina (USA) proclaimed that this day is a day to be observed by every citizen.

It is often linked to iron deficiency.
The connection between low iron levels and restless leg syndrome has been thoroughly studied. Research findings show that those suffering from restless legs are more likely to have lower iron levels.

The day is celebrated every September 23 to increase awareness of sleep-related and neurologic movement disorders. September 23, 2012, was the first Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day. This day is the birthday of professor Karl-Axel Ekborn, a Swedish neurologist who wrote about the disease in great detail in his doctoral dissertation in 1945. Sir Thomas Willis was the first to identify RLS in 1672. In the end, the syndrome of restless legs is now known as Willis-Ekbom Disorder.
It is not clear the cause of RLS-specific gene mutations; lower levels of iron within the brain, changes in the dopamine system, as well as some underlying diseases like Parkinson’s disease and essential tremors are believed to be the cause.
