History of Titanic Remembrance Day:
The term “titanic” was derived from Greek, meant as Gigantic. RMS Titanic is the second of the three Olympic class ocean liners owned by White Start Line, a prominent shipping company. The First and the third were the RMS Olympic and 1-HMHS Britannic respectively. In spite of the increase of competitors, J.Bruce Ismay, the chairperson of White Star Line decided to challenge the rivals on size comfort, luxury rather than speed. Therefore, Thomas Andrews designed the Titanic and further built and completed on 2 April 1912 by Harland and Wolff shipyard. She was designed to accommodate 2435 passengers and 892 crew members.
Her Maiden Voyage was from Southampton, the United Kingdom to New York, the United States with 885 crew members and approximately with 1317 passengers. The exact number of passengers is unknown due to the last minute cancellation and without reservation, After her departure from Southampton on 10 April 1912, she was heading towards the west of New York on the 4rth day of travel in full speed where she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm despite of the warnings from other ships regarding the numerous numbers of the iceberg.
Though it was ordered to stop the ship after spotting a huge iceberg, it became difficult to stop due to the full speed. Finally, after the collision, five of the compartments were broken and filled with water. Immediately Lifeboats were launched and women and children were carefully evacuated. After 2 hours 40 minutes of the accident, the ship gradually was split into two and drowned in the ocean. RMS Carpathia, a Cunard line passenger ship, arrived two hours later and rescued 705 passengers approximately.
since only 1317 Passengers were on board during the voyage, half of the Passengers were able to be accommodated. The number of Lifeboats could have been reduced if the ship had carried full of Passengers. Moreover, the lifeboats were only half filled during the evacuation due to the insufficient training provided to the officers in case of emergency. She tried to signal for other ships but all the efforts went in vain since no ship responded to her including the SS Californian, which was only few miles away from the Titanic.
The Titanic was insured with Lloyds of London and the coverage was estimated to be 1000000 pounds, which is currently equivalent to 91000000 pounds. The same was received within 30 days. Charities and critics from various countries donated over 450000 pounds for the Victims and their families. William Alden Smith, An American senator, investigated to determine the root cause, which prevented the victims of Britain to return to their country that led to objections from England. Finally, the inquiry was concluded as “an act of God”. The High-speed Criticism was rejected by both of the countries.
