Why National Barrier Awareness Day?
This national holiday is a call to action for everyone, to dissolve all forms of barriers in their lives, as well as to eliminate everything that stands in the way of equality and fairness for everyone despite their mental or physical incapacitations.
The day also provides an opportunity for championing the academic pursuits of people with disabilities, therefore encouraging everyone to be good advocates and proponents for disabled people in society. On this day, we are supposed to encourage the blind, deaf, dumb, and even those who cannot walk that disability is not inability.
The National Barrier Awareness Day, therefore, provides a rare opportunity to bring down barriers, walls, and hindrances towards the realization of the kind of world we would like to have. The national holiday also provides us with the challenge to establish ramps and bridges that will be an enabler for the disabled to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
For instance, in the face of disagreements, challenges, and situations that appear limiting, we should always reserve hope and see the potential for developing better opportunities and filling in gaps. The day allows us to get rid of limiting policies that may be preventing the less fortunate from achieving their full potential academically. It challenges us to speak against the unacceptable treatment that human beings are subjected to because of one reason or the other.
As it stands, more than 30 million people across the United States live with different forms of handicap. Moreover, the chances of other people developing one form of disability or the other in their lives are up to 80%. As such, it is necessary that we all open our eyes to the fact that barriers do exist in our lives, and to some more than others.
