Samuel Wilson was a meat packer in New York. He helped soldiers by supplying barrels of meat during the 1812’s war. He used to stamp those barrels ‘U.S’ while supplying them. That’s the reason why the soldiers started calling him Uncle Sam. Later, this nickname got popular.
In 1989, President George HW Bush declared Samuel Wilson’s birth anniversary as Uncle Sam Day. After the 1812’s war, the US army used his artwork on many occasions and campaigns.
