History Of National Hike With A Geek Day:
The event was started by Tom Silva in 2009 and has grown to include over 100 events worldwide, including in Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United States.
This event aims to raise awareness about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. The organization also supports teaching these subjects at the elementary level through its “Build a Better World” campaign.
In 2011, some of the first events were held in Chicago and New York City. In 2013 two more cities were added: Seattle and Philadelphia. The following year saw an expansion to Los Angeles, San Diego, and Washington, DC. In 2015 there were 24 events around North America and one country abroad: Brazil! In 2017 there were 29 events around North America, with one country abroad again: Mexico!
Nowadays, the day is organized by more than 110 schools in 29 states, from Alaska to Oregon, Canada to Mexico, France to Spain, South Africa to Australia, and New Zealand to India – with over 200 000 participants worldwide each year!
